While Bugleweed was traditionally used as a sedative, modern herbalists use it to reduce the activity of an overactive thyroid. It is a general sedative which can help to soothe a nervous or excitable heart. Several ingredients in Bugleweed may decrease levels of thyroid-stimulating hormones and thyroxine (thyroid hormone), according to European researchers.
