Let’s all welcome Dr. Connie to The Green Willow Tree team!! Biographical Sketch Connie Shoemaker has loved science for as long as she can remember. In third grade she read about cross-pollination and decided to experiment with her mother’s prized red roses and the wild blackberry bushes growing along the road. The experiment was a success but, to her mother’s dismay, it demonstrated the dominance of the wild berries over domestic hybrids. From cross-pollination, an insatiably curious mind led her to dissect frogs in the basement, while carefully separating their organs into jars for closer observation. For Christmas during fifth grade, she received her first chemistry set that sparked a lifelong love of biochemistry. After acquiring an A.S. degree in Medical Technology, Connie continued with her coursework toward a B.S. degree from Western Carolina University while working in a local hospital laboratory. When she became chronically ill and her OB/GYN only offered palliative treatment, she began to seek out alternatives. Her search led to a Cherokee herbalist, who used herbs that resolved not only her symptoms, but the illness as well. She excitedly shared the news with her OB/GYN, only to have him scoff disapprovingly. Disenchanted with modern medicine and fascinated with the effectiveness of the herbs, she resigned after ten years of working in a hospital environment to attend the North Carolina School of Natural Healing. For twelve years, she worked as the Laboratory Manager of a leading-edge company that served Complementary and Integrative physicians. She attended lectures, seminars and conferences by the movers and shakers of Integrative Medicine, and read whatever she could get her hands on. Eventually, she held educational seminars for doctors during a time when interest in alternative medicine was at a peak. She delved deeper into herbs by becoming a certified herbalist, joining a local Herb Society, and growing her own plants for medicinal and culinary use. She became technical director for a new company that offered cutting-edge testing for neurotransmitter levels in urine, along with a nutritional, non-drug approach to balancing neurotransmitters. This led her to further investigate the ties between neurotransmitters and hormones, otherwise known as neuro-endocrinology. As her passion in natural medicine continued to grow, the most logical next step was to obtain a Naturopathy (ND) degree. During her ND studies, she applied much of what she learned to her own life. Some things worked well for her and her family and others did not, but one thing was certain—the volumes of contradictory and “new” information that opposed Complementary Medicine solidified her belief that a key to optimum health is going back to the basics of our natural lifecycles. Today, with a N.D. degree from Clayton College of Natural Health, her passion for Natural Medicine keeps her in tune with cutting edge developments in the field.
